Burn the iso file to an CD, and boot from it.

Select your language from the boot meny.

Select “Install Ubuntu” to start the install.

Wait for the CD to boot and provide you with an GUI.

Select Language.

Select Timesone.

Select Keyboard layout.

Setup your hardrives and partisions.

Provide an username, passord, computername and if you want
the user to automaticly login after an boot.

View the summary and confirm.

View the boot gui.

Do wait a few minutes for the “Updater” to popup with the new updated packages.

Provide your username to auth the update prosess.

Updates are downloaded.

Updates are unpacked and installed.

System updated.

ffdshow is an advanced DirectShow filter and VFW codec that supports many audio and video formats.
For example: H.264, MPEG-4, MPEG-2, H.263, VP3, VP6, Theora, MJPEG, SVQ3, MP3, AC3, DTS, E-AC3, AAC, and Vorbis.

Install the codec like any other Windows package.

Select your settings for the various codec.
If you are unsure, leave as default.

 
Take care how you like digital out to be handled.

S/PDIF equals Digital out. (Digital/Optical)
HDMI with/via the gfx card output.

Select your speaker setup from the presets.

Keep working on the settings if you need.
You might want to enable subtitle etc.

Installing MPC HC x64

Media Player Classic Home Cinema is a free audio and video player for Windows.

Modern graphics card offer the possibility to decode partially or completely a video stream using DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA),
in order to reduce CPU usage dramatically. MPC-HC includes an embedded video decoder that uses this technology, to decode H.264 and VC-1
with hardly any CPU time required. Unfortunately the MPC-HC decoder only supports the “bitstream mode” at this stage, which means that only
the most recent graphic cards are supported: nVidia series 8(9)xxx for H.264 only and ATI Radeon HD series for H.264 and VC-1 decoding.

DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) is a Microsoft API specification for the Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 platforms that allows
video decoding to be hardware accelerated. The pipeline allows certain CPU-intensive operations such as iDCT, motion compensation,
deinterlacing and color correction to be offloaded to the GPU. DXVA 2.0 allows more operations, including video capturing and processing
operations, to be hardware accelerated as well.

Enhanced Video Renderer

Media Foundation uses the Enhanced Video Renderer (EVR) for rendering video content, which acts as a mixer as well. It can mix up to 16
simultaneous streams, with the first stream being a reference stream. All but the reference stream can have per-pixel transparency information,
as well as any specified z-order. The reference stream cannot have transparent pixels, and has a fixed z-order position, at the back of all streams.
The final image is composited onto a single surface by coloring each pixel according to the color and transparency of the corresponding pixel in all streams.

Internally, the EVR uses a mixer object for mixing the streams. It can also deinterlace the output and apply color correction, if required.
The composited frame is handed off to a presenter object, which schedules them for rendering onto a Direct3D device, which it shares
with the DWM and other applications using the device. The frame rate of the output video is synchronized with the frame rate of the reference stream.
If any of the other streams (called substreams) have a different frame rate, EVR discards the extra frames (if the substream has a higher frame rate),
or uses the same frame more than once (if it has a slower frame rate).

If you use FFDShow64, you have tons of useful options.
Use the systray icon to bring up the options GUI.

Test you settings to fit your needs, keep it default if you are unsure.

Look for:

- GPU based output. (No CPU load) 
- Multicore support.  (Split load ,and full use of all cores/CPU’s.)
- Keeping everything x64. (No *32 code running)

Right click on the exe file and enable compability mode with vista.

Deside if you like read only or write access.

Press next.

It will now scan your drives for linux filesystems, and you can assign drive letters to them.

You now can read drives with linux filesystems.

Here is an list of the spesifications of the relevant filesystems:

Enable HW virtualization

My portable Z61P have an Intel CPU with Intel VT support,
this will greatly improve preformace in virtual machines.

Reboot into bios and find the settings to enable VT.

Note:

Make sure you cold boot after the change, this means taking out the battery on your portable.
If not the setting will not be enabled.

I used an Intel tool to verify, look for “VT”

Let’s add one CPU so we have Dualcore.
This comes very handy when running Linux as it support SMP and multitreading.
My native CPU also have dual core, so it be an 1:1 mapping.

We also need to enable VT/Nested.

I installed “htop” to provide me with an better preformace overview.
I’m looking to verify that I have 2 cores.

You can also use system monitor to make sure it behaves nice, and have all cores.

Now, how did it go ?

It went from ~300FPS –> ~800FPS
We have 2 CPU cores and SMP/Multithreading support.
We have much better overhead between host<->guest.

Not much useful stuff in the shell in windows.

I realy miss my Ubuntu install that I had in dualboot with my old XP<>Ubuntu setup.

With the Win7 install it nuked my Grub boot loader, and I rather not mess around with the
MBR before I had some more handson with Win7 and brake it to oblivion.

So, let’s grab the latest version of VirtualBox and install it.

Here’s my settings for Ubuntu 9.04.
Make note of the following most relevant settings:

- 3D Acceleration –> Enable

I used the “Virtual Media Manager” to create an “grow as you use” diskfile with *.vdi extension.

Head over to Ubuntu.com and get the 9.04 Desktop iso.

Make sure you have enable CDROM support, and point to the downloaded ISO file.

Start your Virtual machine and select your language from the boot loader.

- Make sure you address and error message VirtualBox gives you when you try start it.
- Make sure it boot’s from CDROM

Ubuntu should now run it Init/boot procedure from cdrom.
Note that this is an live session, so it’s an fully operational OS in itself

The Ubuntu installer ask for your Locale information, provide it as it fit’s you.

Select your timezone, or use the map to help you find it.

 
Do provide locale for your keyboard layout. Default usualy works, as it picks from your above settings.

 
We keep it simple and just use the entire disk you created above, and let Ubuntu suggest partitions/setup.

Prove the installer with an usernavn, password, computername.

I usualy select “automagic login”, as it saves time and I don’t have anything private on test
boxes such as this.

An summary for the end, check your settings and press next.

Ubuntu will now partition the drive, copy over files, setup packages etc.

You will be notified when the install is finished, reboot it..

Do remeber to use the VirtualBox gui to unmount the ISO file.

Your virtual machine should now boot and login.
Wait a few minutes and the Autoupdater should popup.
Select it and make sure it install all updates and reboot.

Note:

- You need to have internet connection for your host os (The OS you run VirtualBox on)
- Make sure you also enable networking in the OS profile i VirtualBox.
- If the autoupdater don’t show up, start it manualy from the Administration menu –> Update
- If you have any strange errors from booting, try an reinstall and repeat the above steps.

Now while Ubuntu is running, select Devices in menu and select “install Guest Additions”
It should automagicly mount an ISO images with the guest OS drivers.

From an Terminal start the install script with sudo in front and full path.
Reboot after.

Note:

Many people fear the terminal, Don’t. It’s your best friend.
You may start the Terminal from the menu and write “sudo”, then drag and drop the “VBoxLinuxAdditions-***” to the terminal to save time to write full path.
You may also write “sudo /media/cd then press tab to enable path completion (Feeling the power now ?)

Like magic
We now have an virtual Ubuntu install with 3D support.

Note:

- Make sure you rebooted in the step above and that you use the correct install script.
- All 3D functions are not working, so some games etc don’t run.

Suggestions to play with:

- Turn on Desktop Eye candy (Compiz)
- Try an game like Unreal/Quake
- Try using OpenGL for video acc.
- Try run an windows game under Wine

Select “Machine –> Seamless mode” in VirtualBox Gui to enable seamless mode.
You now have an fully transparrent cross platform without the hassle of dualboot.
And you have basic 3D support

Make sure this settings are set to 100%, otherwise you get scales GUI that looks awful.

Also note that Internet Explorer have the same scale function located on the lower right corner.

Make sure “Use small icons” are selected, using large icons waste space and look ugly.

You might want an simple free anitvirus, I use AVG that is supported in Win7.
(No X64 native client tho)

Windows 7 have fixed the preformance issues that Vista had surrounding filecopy,
also you get realtime speed when clicking “More details”

I get around the same speed as in Linux.

Make sure you activated Win7, I was lazy and didn’t want to enter the boring key’s at the install.

Another useful feature you might know from Mac/Linux are “Library”.
They are very handy ways to keep you data organized.

I made one for ISO to handle my ISO images, and one called “Appz” to keep my install *.exe files.

This might be a good time to clean up your old “My documents”

Iso is an library that points to c:\users\username\iso, just like softlinking in *nix land.

Note the new filstructure/Logic.

c:\users –> /home in *nix, no more crypting “documents and settings” crap..

Da har vi litt fartstid med Windows 7 og tenkte dele med meg noen gode tips.

Husk å sette på 100% på view, ellers så vil windows skalere vinduene og alt ser bare blast og merkelig ut.
Merk at du har det samme i Internet Explorer.

Du trenger en Antivirus kansje, jeg bruker gratis utgaven av AVG.

Ush.. Windows 7 har ikke med noen av de kjente verktøyene fra Linux land.

Windows 7 har grei ytelse under kopiering av filer, noe som jeg ikke var fornøyd med i Vista.

Så bør du verifisere og sørge for at Windows7 er aktivert.

Jeg har laget meg noen Bibliotek, noe som tilsvarer softlink/snarveier.
Ganske fikkfig egentlig, fordi du finner raskt frem til data.

Lag en katalog som du peker biblioteket imot.

Merk at windows har gått bort ifra det krypiske “Documents and settings” greia
og har nå en mer /home type stuktur.

Ellers bør man jo få inn det vanlige smør og brød ting:

- Adobe Reader

Etter å tatt backup av filene mine kunne jeg endelig starte med å få inn Windows 7 på min Lenovo Z61P.
Jeg brukte en extern USB disk der jeg bare dumpa over alt fra XP.

Innstall gikk helt greit, synes den tok lenger ting en forventet.
Det har jo blitt sagt at det er like raskt og enkelt som f.eks en Ubuntu install.

Ellers så var det litt issues med oppløsningen, manglet driver for fingerlesern og noe annet smårask.

En rask windows update lastet ned ny/manglende ATI driver, samt litt annet snaxx så alt kom på plass.

Driver å blir kjent med hvor alt har blitt gjemt, samt danner meg et første inntrykk av hvordan Win7 er.

Så langt virker det helt greit, liksom så godt og greit Microsoft kan få det til.

Justere så vi skjer filer som er gjemt av windows, og at vi ser filnavn med etternavn.

Endelig så støtter windows PNG filer, noe jeg bruker mye på Linux/Bildebehandling.

Etter noen timer med fikling så begynner Skrivebordet å se brukbart ut, har også fått inn litt applikasjoner.

Det gamle “My documents” har fått sån MAC look på seg, der alt skal være indexsert etter type data.
Før så hadde vi jo alt i en god og ryddig katalog struktur.

Win7 har også uptodate Powershell som vist nok skal gi en del funksjonalitet rundt scripting som jeg er vant til fra Linux.
Vi får se når jeg får tid til å leke med det. Virker jo som det har potensiale.

Det er med et rimelig simpelt tegneprogram. Det er best til å bare skalere bilder, eller legge på noen enkel text e.l
Vi må nok inn med Lightroom, CS og gutta med tiden.

En fiffig funksjon er at du kan styre ikonene på systray’n så den slipper bli full av dilledall.

Lastet ned Liva greia, og her var det med en mini blog skriver som jeg lager dette med.
Enkelt og greit med de funksjoner du trenger. Kansje jeg har en karriere som “blogger” eller hva det nå heter. Tiden får vise.

4,3 mikkemuspoeng fikk bærbaren, samt 1G forsvinner (delt minne til gfx kort?)

Alt av hardware kom på plass til slutt.

Etter en halv dag med Win7 synes jeg det virker helt fint..
Vi får se hvor godt den takler mitt daglige bruk, og hva annet spennede som ligger gjemt..
